Tarot Talk 3

When you sit for a tarot card reading are there energy fields at work? Have you chosen the cards or have the cards chosen you?

Tarot card reading is a form of divination. Simply stated, the cards are used to interpret the past, present and future or to answer specific questions related to the person being read (also known as a sitter or querent). The deck is comprised of 78 cards and divided into two sections: the Major Arcana (22 cards) and the Minor Arcana (56 cards). The Major Arcana cards depict life path, and the Minor Arcana cards explain life situations and personal encounters.

During a reading, the cards are shuffled and laid out on the table as spreads. Note that there are many different types of spreads. The cards and their positions within the spread have their own unique meanings, which are interpreted by the reader. In this monthly feature, we will not attempt to explain the synchronicity that is at work; however, we will offer a description of the various cards found within the classic and ever-popular Rider-Waite deck. This month?s selection is the?Hermit card.

MAJOR ARCANA, NUMBER 9

?

?

?

The Hermit card denotes a need to have some space between yourself and the every day hustle and bustle of a busy world. It is necessary for the Hermit to retreat. Happiness for the Hermit requires seclusion, freedom for material wants and time for intense introspection.

?

The answers cannot be found in the physical world. The truths he seeks are internal and spiritual. The distraction of a well-developed social life can only impede his quest for personal truths. Although not anything remotely resembling an extrovert, the Hermit does need to share time with others so that he can learn, teach, guide or be guided. The Hermit?s time spent with people depletes his energy quickly. To avoid an overload he has to retreat from social settings rather quickly.

?

In the reversed position, the Hermit card signifies loneliness, immaturity and acting hastily without thinking.
