Mandala

mandala

The word “mandala” is the Sanskrit word meaning “circle”. It has also been translated as “the center”. The mandala has been associated with many cultures, including Hinduism, Buddhism and Native America Indians. Most mandalas are represented in a concentric design, and any square or geometric shapes within them stem from a circular center point, for example, in Buddhism, a Buddha is encircled in the center. Mandalas are usually very colorful and those colors represent different meanings, emotions and transformations.

Mandalas are used in meditation as a focal point, just as a mantra (a personal sound or word to quiet the mind). They are beautiful, symbolic visual aids representing wholeness and harmony with the universe. They cause us to reflect on our mind, body and spirit and bring us closer to a higher consciousness. Their hypnotic effect can help take your mind off of day-to-day mundane thoughts and chatter so that you can better focus on your spiritual journey. Mandalas allow your creative mind to break away from the constraints of your analytical mind. Color and sound therapists also use these images as healing tools. They also have become a mainstay in psychic meditation and in the alignment of the chakras.

To use a mandala to gain inner knowledge and awareness, you must first choose one that “speaks” to you. Study its design and the colors, and notice what type of feelings come over you when you look at it. If you feel positive emotions, then you have chosen the right one for you.

Before you begin meditating on your mandala, set your intention. Your intention can be anything you want it to be; something that is going on in your life, something that you want to more clearly understand, or asking for guidance in a troublesome area of your life. Some mandalas have their own meanings attached to them and you may use that meaning as your intention, if you prefer.

Begin your meditation by gazing into the mandala and letting go of all unwanted thoughts. Focus on the here and now and not on what physical chores you could be doing or other obligations. Imagine that you are floating into the mandala and allow yourself to absorb the wonder and beauty of the colors and design. Relax and stay focused. Most people feel a sense of clarity and a clearer picture about their intention once the meditation is completed.
